On the heels of helping to secure a third-place Sonoma County League team finish with an 8-4 record, six Sonoma Valley High School tennis girls competed in the annual SCL singles and doubles tournaments last Thursday and Friday on the Santa Rosa Junior College courts.
Entering the SCL doubles tourney as a defending champion was Sonoma senior Michelle Stovall, who won last year’s title paired with exchange student Stephanie Brett, teamed with freshman standout Syndey Moore and posted opening-round and quarterfinal victories to reach the semifinals.
But the Lady Dragon duo fell short of playing in the SCL doubles final when they were dealt an eliminating 5-7, 6-2, 6-4 loss by Hanna Sloth and Sophie Murphy from undefeated league champion Petaluma in their semifinal showdown.
In their doubles tourney first round of action, Stovall and Moore beat Piner’s Amanda Hernandez and Sinoun Phoung 6-7, 6-1, 6-4, then followed up with a 6-1, 6-2 quarterfinal rout of Elsie Allen’s Annie Huynn and Mckenna Smyth.
Sonoma’s other doubles tournament representatives were junior Stephanie Angulo and sophomore Alison Gray, who ended up dropping a 0-6, 2-6 decision to eventual champions Hillary Brennen and Kate Steward from Analy.
