Sonoma Market gets an award for giving

Sonoma Market and Glen Ellen Village Market will be honored with the Outstanding Business Partner award at a celebration luncheon, Wednesday, Nov. 6, by the Association of Fundraising Professionals, California Wine Country Chapter.

The event celebrates National Philanthropy Day, an international day of recognition that recognizes the people and organizations enriching our community and world through philanthropy. The event takes place at the Wells Fargo Center for Performing Arts in Santa Rosa, at 11 a.m., and tickets are available.

Over the years, Sonoma Market has given many millions of dollars in financial support and goods to the Sonoma Valley community. That number has grown significantly in the past 12 years, to an average of $170,000 annually. And that does not account for Dale Downing and Don Shone’s personal philanthropic efforts.

In 2013, Sonoma Market implemented its Community Card program, in which they committed to donating 5 percent of their gross sales back to local nonprofit organizations. In April, they wrote checks totaling nearly $30,000, demonstrating a generous plan for sustained philanthropy and an innovative way for a business to invest in the community.

The celebration luncheon will also acknowledge individuals and organizations in the following categories: Outstanding Individual or Family Philanthropist, Outstanding Civic Organization Partner and Outstanding Youth in Philanthropy.

Tickets are $65 a person and can be purchased at afpwcc.org.
