Lady Dragons win after coach Neves resigns

In the wake of coaching the Sonoma Valley High School varsity volleyball girls to a Sonoma County League title three-peat and securing another postseason appearance, head coach Mindy Neves resigned her post in a sudden announcement prior to last Thursday's SCL match in Pfeiffer Gym against Piner.

Neves cited personal reasons for her resignation – the same statement, without further reasons given, released by the school – and stated that she wants the girls to keep being successful into, and through, the postseason.

Stepping in as Sonoma's interim head coach is varsity assistant and junior varsity head coach Chelsea Scott, who, like Neves, is an SVHS graduate and former standout prep and college spiker.

Scott and assistant coach Michelle Foster kept all the pre-match preparations in place and then guided the young and talented Lady Dragons through the stunning late development leading up the evening's SCL match, and their 25-7, 25-19, 25-12 rout of visiting Piner.

On Saturday Sonoma's spikers competed in the Northgate Tournament in Walnut Creek and posted a 4-1 third-place record, with their lone loss coming at the hands of eventual tourney champion Branson 18-25, 18-25 in the semifinals.
