Coming off tough Sonoma County League losses to the frontrunners, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity soccer boys and girls bounced back with a pair of dominating efforts against SCL rival Healdsburg at the end of last week.
After first-place defending champion Analy salvaged a 3-1 win in an evenly played match in Sebastopol, the second-place Dragons hosted Healdsburg at the high school field on Friday and, after getting the equalizer at one goal each midway through the second half, tallied a thrilling late goal to pull out a 2-1 triumph.
The first Dragon goal came off a penalty kick from 25 yards out that senior Andy Chávez bended around the Greyhound defensive wall and inside the right post past the goalie and into the corner of the net.
Sonoma's match-winning goal came when, with approximately three minutes remaining in regulation play, Paco Martínez delivered a right-on pass for an assist to fellow senior Brian Ruiz, who took it in stride and lasered home an accurate ball.
The Dragon boys host SCL foe El Molino at 7 p.m. tomorrow, Wednesday at Arnold Field, and before the match Sonoma will honor its 10 seniors, including Chávez, Martínez, Ruiz, Alejandro Echeverría, Anthony Echeverría, Max Floerke, Anthony García, Miguel Guillén, Zack Thompson and Jesus Molina.
