Rough go for Sonoma in water polo, cross-country

It was a tough go both afoot and in the pool for Sonoma Valley High School’s cross-country and water polo teams, respectively, in league road matches held Wednesday afternoon.

In what turned out to be their Sonoma County League openers – last week's scheduled SCL-opening meets against Analy in Sebastopol was postponed due to park-trail construction – Sonoma's varsity cross-country boys and girls competed in a league tri-meet against Petaluma and Piner in Santa Rosa.

Running the Foothill Park 5K course, the Dragon boys’ score of  52 was second to race-winning Piner’s 25, but it was good enough to beat Petaluma's 58.

Leading the Sonoma boys were senior Owen Ljung’s solid second-place finish on the 3.1-mile park layout in 18 minutes, 34 seconds; senior Christian Martinez’s sixth place in 19:51; senior Keegan Ginter’s 10th in 19:58; freshman Leonardo Macedonio’s 16th in 20:47; junior Return Bongiovanni’s 21st in 22:55; and sophomore Trevor Martinelli’s 22nd in 23:03.

The Lady Dragon runners were third in the girls’ race with a 63 score, following victorious Piner’s 25 and Petaluma’s 47.
