Amateur bakers welcome at pie competition

Whether you prefer pumpkin or peach, raspberry or rhubarb, the Sonoma Ecology Center is asking Valley bakers to enter their best homemade pies in a juried pie competition. The competition is a flagship piece of the center’s annual Fall Festival on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at the Sonoma Garden Park.

Pies must be 8-to-10-inches in size, and can come in any flavor. All pies, including crusts and fillings, must be fully homemade, which means no purchased pie crusts or canned fillings are allowed. Locally sourced ingredients are highly encouraged.

A panel of local celebrity judges will judge the pies on taste, texture and appearance. Prizes will be awarded to the top three entrants.

After the contest, festival-goers can buy slices of the juried pies, with he option of ice cream on the side.

Contest registration is accepted in advance or at the door. The entry fee per pie is $10, but baking contestants enjoy free admission to the festival. For more information or to register, contact Marcia Duval at 996-0712, ext. 111, email piecontest@SonomaEcologyCenter.org or visit sonomaecologycenter.org.
