Volunteers get first peek at Montini

Volunteers are sought to work on the Montini Open Space Preserve on Saturday, Sept. 28, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The project is being overseen by the Sonoma County Agricultural Preservation and Open Space District.

Volunteers will have the first chance to experience the newly constructed 1.8-mile trail, complete with an ADA-accessible segment, and will help prepare it for its public debut in the spring of 2014.

Designed by award-winning trail designer Don Beers, and constructed by expert international trail builder Don Hays, the Montini trail is meant to appear as if it has always existed in the landscape.

Keeping with principles of sustainable design, the trail sensitively follows the contours of the land leading to quiet oak groves, historic rock quarries, rolling grasslands, oak woodlands and spring wildflowers.

Volunteers can enjoy spectacular views of Sonoma Valley and San Pablo Bay while brushing the new trail tread to allow the trail to soak in moisture from the rain and compact; and share trail stories from the district’s open space planner and trail designers.
