PlayFest includes six short shows

Sonoma Stage Works (SSW), in association with the Sonoma Theatre Alliance, will be presenting six short plays for one weekend only, Sept. 20 to 22, in the newly refurbished Andrews Hall at the Sonoma Community Center. The show will be the culmination of PlayFest 2013, Sonoma’s first short-play competition and festival.

SSW put out a call to Bay Area playwrights for both 10-minute and one-act plays last January. It received a total of 84 submissions, from which 12 were selected to be performed as staged readings back in June. The six that were finally chosen to be fully staged this month include both comedies and dramas covering a wide range of subject matter.

“We’ve got a lot of diversity among the selections,” said Todd Evans, the creative director of SSW, “and they are all very entertaining in their own way.”

A total of 14 actors, guided by six directors, are involved in the upcoming production.

Coordinator Monica McKey admitted it was an enormous project to pull together from start to finish, but a worthwhile effort. “Short plays are quite popular these days, and it’s been exciting to see this project so well received here in Sonoma. Hopefully, it can become an annual event,” she said.
