County's human rights panel seeks junior members

The Sonoma County Commission on Human Rights welcomes interested high school students ages 14 to 18 to submit an application to the second year of the countywide Junior Commission on Human Rights.

The experience of working on the Junior Commission will both encourage participants to be involved in the day-to-day issues which affect Sonoma County residents and also to stretch the boundaries of their individual and collective exploration of the meaning and impact of human rights.

The inaugural year of the Junior Commission has been an exciting one. Commissioners formed ad hoc committees addressing Women’s Rights, LGBT Rights and Disability Rights, and got an up-close look at vital community services like the Family Justice Center and Becoming Independent. The panel also launched its own Facebook page, met with elected officials, community organizers and law enforcement, participated in a Human Trafficking Forum, and attended the California Association of Human Relations Organizations conference in San Francisco.

Applications will be accepted through April 15. Candidates selected for consideration will be notified for interviews by May 15 with commissioner terms beginning Sept. 2014 through June 2015.
