Community center hosts waba-sabi lantern papermaking workshop

The Sonoma Community Center will present a two-day workshop, “The Art of Papermaking for Wabi-Sabi Lanterns” with visiting artist Jacqueline Mallegni from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 9-10. Register by Aug. 5.

Participants will learn to make handmade paper from abaca, a traditional Asian fiber made from Manila hemp, and add plant materials of their choice to bring color and texture to their paper.

Mallegni will then lead students through the structural and sculptural possibilities of working with paper and natural materials. Under her direction, each participant will use his/her handmade paper to create a beautiful lantern that emits a soft glow.

Wabi-sabi, the quintessential Japanese aesthetic, will be the creative thread that weaves the workshop together as participants experience the beauty of things modest and humble.

Paper made in class will also be suitable for painting with ink and marbling, gift-wrapping, and many other uses in the paper arts.

For more information, or to register, call 938-4626, ext. 1. The Sonoma Community Center is located at 276 E. Napa St., Sonoma.
