Clearing up errors about Sonoma Clean Power

Editor, Index-Tribune:

I read John Fanucchi’s Sept. 23 letter to the editor (“Difficult opt-out to keep PG&E”) about Sonoma Clean Power (SCP) with great interest, as both a Sonoma resident and as Customer Service Director at SCP. I am compelled to write and correct a few errors in his letter.

Most residents throughout the county recently received the first of four enrollment notices from SCP letting them know that service will begin in December and that now is, in fact, the time to choose. They may choose to stay with SCP, save 4 to 5 percent on electric rates and use electricity from cleaner sources, or choose to opt out and buy electric power from PG&E. This is a real choice that Mr. Fanucchi and all of us never had before when PG&E was the only provider.

Residents will receive another notice before service begins, one during the first month of service and a final notice after they’ve received a PG&E bill with SCP charges listed.

It is true that our enrollment notices are attractively designed to motivate you to open them up. When you do, you’ll be presented with clear, easy to understand options and information, including our full terms and conditions of service in both English and Spanish.

We’re proud of the money we’re saving customers – $6 million in our first year of operation – while actively contributing to a cleaner environment. We look forward to serving everyone in Sonoma, our beautiful Valley and the County.
