Carol Hanford Renforth

Our lovely, smiling Carol died unexpectedly on Oct. 3, 2013, following a brief, severe lung infection.

She was born May 12, 1951, in Oakland, and moved with her family to Glen Ellen in 1958. Many will remember her as a lifeguard and swim instructor in Sonoma over several summers in the late ’60s. She graduated from Sonoma Valley High School in 1968 and went on to spend a year in France. She attended Pomona College, graduating in 1973 with a BA degree in theater arts. Later, she studied for her MFA at Carnegie Mellon University.

Carol’s professional career began in the costume shop at the Ashland Oregon Shakespeare Festival. For more than 30 years, she lived in the Seattle area, utilizing her meticulous, artistic talents at Seattle Repertory Theater, Seattle Opera and Pacific Northwest Ballet where she was a draper at the time of her death. She also enjoyed invitational opportunities in Europe, creating costumes for Ballet de Monte Carlo.

Carol is survived by her mother, Janet Hanford, as well as four siblings, Cam Martindale (Marty), Peggy Hanford (Tom Shaffer), Joan Young (Larry) and Doug Hanford. She also leaves the following nieces and nephews, Jennifer Powers (Jack), Sarah Wheeler, Christine Young (Patrick Vail), Hope Wirth (Derek), Joshua Young (Elaina) and Teddy Hanford. Carol’s great-nephews are Matthew and Andrew Powers. Her great-niece is Adelaide Vail.

Memorial services will be private.
