Burglars picking empty vacation rentals

The Sonoma County Sheriff’s Office has seen a huge spike in vacation rental home burglaries. Since September of 2013, detectives have tracked 52 burglaries countywide including two in Boyes Hot Springs and one in Agua Caliente.

According to Sgt. Mike Raasch, with the Sheriff’s Property Crimes Unit, of the 52 burglaries, Guerneville had 15, Cazadero reported nine, Forestville and Bodega Bay reported seven each while the rest were spread around other areas of the county.

Detectives believe that a majority of the vacation rental burglaries are related to one another based on locations and other similarities. The suspect(s) have been mainly stealing flat screen televisions, other electronics, and in some cases furniture. Property Crimes detectives arrested three women back in December who detectives believe were responsible for at least three burglaries with a similar method of operation. Detectives do not believe these three women are responsible for the latest rash of vacation rental home burglaries.

Detectives are asking that the public to be alert to suspicious people and vehicles in area of vacation homes and report it to law enforcement immediately. If you have any information regarding these cases, call Detective Donald Fletcher at 565-2185.
