An assignation for an assassination?

By I-T letters

Editor, Index-Tribune:

The caption for the photo of Ruth Paine speaking at the Historical Society meeting Sept. 13, reads, in part, “Ruth Paine displays a photo taken in her kitchen the morning after President Kennedy’s assignation … ”

“Assignation” is not the same as “assassination.” An assignation is either an assigning or an appointment, especially a tryst. I suppose one could say Kennedy had an appointment with death – tragic for him, his family, and the country.
