The Lady Dragons - who hosted first-place Petaluma last night, with the results not available at presstime - beat Casa by scores of 25-11, 25-18 and 25-13 and claimed the two-match, regular-season series. Leading the Sonoma spikers past the Lady Gauchos were senior Kendall Smith's 16 kills; senior Sophia Somers' 12 digs and seven kills; junior Kaylee Vollert's 11 digs; and four kills each by senior Emily Hawing and sophomores Jersey Witous and Rebecca Stone.
Both the Lady Dragons' freshman and junior varsity teams won with two-game sweeping efforts. Make that four straight SCL wins, with three of them coming on the road, for Sonoma's varsity soccer boys, who dominated the first half and had a 1-0 lead at the break Wednesday night at Petaluma's Durst Field.
In the second half Sonoma had to hold off the charging Trojans to preserve its one-goal advantage, and eventually claim a 1-0 victory.
Scoring the Dragons' lone goal was junior VĂ-ctor RĂ“bles, off an assist by senior Brian Clementino. With the victory, the Sonoma boys - directed by head coach Pedro Merino and assistant coach Mike Linder - improved their SCL second-place record to 5-2-1 with four league matches remaining in the regular season.
The Dragons host longtime rival Casa Grande - both teams battled to a scoreless tie in their first meeting - today in a 4 p.m. match at the high school field, before they hit the road for a crucial match against SCL first-place Windsor, the top-ranked team in the Redwood Empire.
Sonoma hosts Analy and Healdsburg in its final two matches on Friday afternoon, Oct. 23, and Wednesday night, Oct. 28, respectively.
For the second straight match, Sonoma's girls' golf team couldn't field a complete lineup and lost to Analy Monday afternoon at The Links at Bodega Harbour course.
Turning in another medalist effort was Sonoma senior Brooke Dagner's nine-hole, match-low round of 6-over-par 42, followed by senior Nicola Petersen's 64, and freshman Jordann Dagner's 65.
The Lady Dragons wrapped up their dual-match season yesterday at Healdsburg - results not available at presstime - and will compete in the SCL championship finals this Tuesday, Oct. 20, starting at noon on the Oakmont Golf Club's east course in Santa Rosa.
With Tuesday's major autumn storm washing out their SCL home match against Petaluma, Sonoma's varsity soccer girls hosted league rival Casa Grande yesterday, with the results not available at presstime.
The Lady Dragons will host two more SCL matches next week, with Windsor coming to town for a 7 p.m. (jayvees start at 5) showdown this Tuesday evening, Oct. 20, under the Arnold Field lights, followed by a 4 p.m. battle with visiting Analy on Thursday, Oct. 22, at the high school field.
