SVHS Homecoming Candidates named

It's Homecoming at Sonoma Valley High School, which means a parade to the Plaza, a football game and the traditional Saturday night dance where the Homecoming King and Queen will be crowned.

Today at noon, the students will take their homecoming floats and head up Broadway in a parade that loops the Plaza and heads back to the school. Then it's up to Arnold Field where the Dragons face Casa Grande High School. The junior varsity game starts at 5 p.m. while the varsity kickoff is at 7:30 p.m.

On Saturday, the students will head to the Boys & Girls Club in Maxwell Farms Regional Park for the Homecoming Dance from 7 to 11 p.m. During this celebration, the Homecoming King and Queen, as elected by their classmates, will be announced. Below, is more information about the candidates. Sheala DeMartini, 17, is the daughter of Shelley DeGeorgis of Sonoma. She is actively involved with the girls' golf team and has also helped Brooke Dagner teach golf. She is also the editor of the yearbook. She is uncertain of where she wants to go to college, but will look for a school with a pre-med program.

Araceli Moya, 17, is the daughter of Manuel and Maria Moya of Sonoma. She is vice president of the Avid Club and a member of Link Crew and the Academic Talent Search. For the past two years, she has volunteered her time at the Boys & Girls Clubs of Sonoma Valley and recently joined the Keystone Club there, which is focused on community participation. In her free time she enjoys drawing, swimming and playing guitar. She plans to attend a four-year university where she looks forward to discovering her major.

Megan Cline, 17, is the daughter of Fred and Nancy Cline of Sonoma. She runs varsity cross-country and track and is a member of the Interact Club. She also has been involved with Relay For Life and has tutored other students. She enjoys running, wakeboarding, snowboarding and ping-pong. She plans to attend a four-year university and pursue a career in nutrition.
Andie Nibler, 17, is the daughter of Kim and Dave Nibler of Sonoma. She plays on the varsity basketball team and also volunteers as assistant coach for the seventh-grade girls basketball team at Adele Harrison Middle School. She enjoys hanging out with her friends. Next year she plans to go to college, but is not sure what she wants to major in.

Shirley Morovich, 17, is the daughter of Roberta and John Morovich of Sonoma. She plays basketball and water polo. She also volunteers coaching the sixth-grade girls basketball team at St. Francis Solano school. She said she does not know where she wants to attend college yet.

Joe Alexander-Short, 18, is the son of Rosanne Alexander and Gery Short of Sonoma. During his high school years, he played varsity basketball and soccer, was student activities director of Slate, was the student representative for the Booster Club, participated in the Sonoma International Film Festival through the film program and was a member of the high school's daily news broadcast. He also was a youth basketball camp volunteer, and Avid tutor and a former student reporter for The Sonoma Index-Tribune. He enjoys playing club soccer with Santa Rosa United and listening to old music. He hopes to attend a four-year university and wants to study abroad in South America. (He developed a passion for the culture after living with relatives in Guatemala in Middle School).

James Fanucchi, 17, is the son of Kim and Tony Fanucchi of El Verano. In high school, he participates in the Photo Club and is an editor of the yearbook. He is also one of the teen boardmembers of the Shop, a teen music venue overseen by Operation Youth. As a sophomore in high school, he was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis. In his spare time he enjoys taking pictures and riding his bike, which he's also developed a knack for fixing. Last summer he accompanied National Geographic Photographer Joel Sartore on a shoot at Glacier National Park in Montana. After high school he hopes to attend San Francisco State University to pursue a degree in photojournalism.

Sean Hammett, 17, is the son of Bill and Sara Hammett of Sonoma. He plays water polo, is involved with track and field, writes for the Student Voice and is involved with La Sociedad Honoraria Hispanica. He is also involved with Boy Scouts of America Troop #16. He enjoys waterskiing and backpacking. He does not yet know where he plans to attend college, but aspires to become an architect.

David DeSmet, 17, is the son of Vicki and Gary DeSmet of Sonoma. He is a national merit scholarship semi-finalist who also participates in Jazz Band, Madrigals and Stock Club. He is also involved with Boy Scout Troop #16. In his spare time, he plays piano and performs with the Valley band the Jaywalkers. He hopes to attend a science-oriented university such as MIT and obtain a degree in physics.

Jordan Villa Señor, 18, is the son of Sam and Estela Villa Señor of Sonoma. At school, he is involved with the Soroptimist Club and Summer Search. He also lent a hand in constructing a school in El Salvador with the nonprofit Seeds of Learning. In his spare time he likes drawing, listening to music and hanging out with his friends. He hopes to attend a four-year college and pursue a career where he could work to provide aid to foreign countries.
