Anglers fishing near Rat Rock and China Camp in the bay are finding sturgeon said Keith Fraser at Loch Lomond Bait Shop in San Rafael.

They are also catching a few keeper-sized striped bass. Unfortunately, sea lions are also finding sturgeon at the mouth of the Petaluma River, said Debbe Vinje at Lenoard's Bait Shop at Port Sonoma.

Debbe and other anglers have seen the sea lions tossing sturgeon about like rag dolls.  Sea lions are also disrupting fishing in the Napa River upstream as far as the City of Napa, Debbe added. She and Joel fished on a party boat south of the Bay Bridge Monday and caught some leopard sharks and a bat ray. They also lost a large sturgeon.

Debbe has also heard reports that the striper fishing near the mothball fleet and Martinez has been pretty good.

Capt. Rick Powers, of Bodega Bay Sportfishing, has had some productive squid fishing trips this week, including one Sunday that resulted in 288 squid to 55 pounds for 17 anglers by 10 a.m.  Rick said the weather was beautiful and he plans trips for Friday, Saturday and Sunday, weather permitting.
Rainbow trout were planted in Santa Rosa's Lake Ralphine last week.

I haven't heard much from Lake Berryessa, Clear Lake or Lake Sonoma in the past two weeks.  But cold weather and colder water generally slows the action.

It snowed on the upper Sacramento River this week and trout fishing has come to a halt. Meanwhile the lower Sac is still a great place to drift for trout and steelhead.  I've also heard that the Klamath is producing trout and steelhead.

Just a reminder, you'll need to buy a new fishing license for 2009.
