On the last weekend of September, the Sonoma "Ikaika Ho'omau" powerlifters competed in the USPF Sierra Nevada Cup Championships in Grass Valley and, again, struck a mother-lode of awards, including 16 first places, five best-lifter honors and setting 12 state and four American records. Not only leading the Valley team's success as its head coach and trainer, but also as a competitor, Sonoma's Wayne Jandoc captured full-meet first place in the 50-to-54-year-old masters division's 242-pound weight class and set two state records with a 633-pound squat and a 435-pound bench press. Jandoc, owner of Jandoc's Jym 2U personal training and a personal trainer at the Sonoma Golf Club, was also given the best lifter award in the masters division.
Possibly stealing the Sierra Nevada Cup powerlifting show for Sonoma was Heather Keola, who competed in the 16-17-year-old junior women's division's light-heavyweight class and was presented the best lifter award after claiming three first places in full meet, bench only and deadlift only, and setting a total of 10 records. Keola established six new state records and four American records, including a 375-pound squat, a 160-pound bench press, and a 330-pound deadlift. Sonoma's Jim Chaaban lifted in both the 40-44-year masters and open divisions at 242 pounds and took first places in masters full meet and bench only, and open full meet and bench only; a masters second in deadlift; set two state records with a 518-pound bench press; and earned two best lifter awards in the bench press.
Two other record-setters for the Sonoma "Ikaika Ho'omau" team, which trains out of Juan's Fitness in Sonoma Valley, were Greg Lewis and Edgar Reyes.
Lewis competed in the 18-19-year-old junior division 181-pound weight class and was given his division's best lifter award after first-place finishes in full meet and bench only, and achieved two state records with a 353-pound bench press. Reyes lifted in the 20-23-year-old junior division at 220 pounds and took a full meet first place, while setting a state record with a 441-pound bench press.
Rounding out the results for the Sonoma powerlifters were Shawn Buckley's open division best-lifter award for earning first places at 198 pounds in full meet, bench only and deadlift only; Gerardo Molina's and Antonio Jimenez's open division first places in full meet at 132 and 165 pounds, respectively; and Antonio Machuca's open division second place in full meet at 181 pounds.
