Lady Dragons' Dagner 6th at NCS girls golf qualifier, advances

After leaving the Sonoma County League girls' golf field behind en route to winning the SCL individual title, Sonoma Valley High School's junior star Brooke Dagner competed in today's North Coast Section qualifier tournament at the Oakmont Golf Club's East course and she posted an overall sixth-place finish. Dagner shot a front-nine round of 36 and back-nine 41 for a 77-stroke total on the 18-hole par-63 course - she won the league crown with a 72 on the same Oakmont course - and qualified to play in the NCS championships, which take place at Oakmont's West course next Monday, Nov. 3.

Tennis women Ranzau, Rentz star The Valley's Vicki Ranzau and Heidi Rentz were standout players who formed the No. 1 doubles team for the La Cantera women's tennis club of Santa Rosa, which they helped achieve the United States Tennis Association's third ranking in the nation with their strong play over the weekend at the USTA 3.5 senior womens national playoffs in Indian Wells. Ranzau and Rentz played No. 1 doubles and beat teams from Washington, Hawaii, Puerto Rico and Virginia to help their their La Cantera club into the semifinals. More on Ranzau's and Rentz's accomplishments will appear in a future I-T issue.

Youth soccer Halloween Tourney played

Sonoma Valley Youth Soccer Association's 12th annual Division 3 boys' and girls' Halloween Tournament took place at a variety of Valley fields over the weekend, with 10 Sonoma select squads competing against top teams from throughout Northern California. The Valley teams that competed in their age-groups were the U16 Excel girls, who topped Sonoma's U15 United for the title; the U16 United 92 boys, who nipped Sonoma's U15 Crush for title; the title-winning U14 Santos boys, U14 Xtreme girls, U12 Strikers boys and U12 Rush girls, and the U13 Vintage girls and U13 Heat boys. Archbishop Hanna High boys shining

Hanna Boys Center's Archbishop Hanna High School is wrapping up a successful boys' soccer season and a team story and updates, along with those of the seventh- and eighth-grade boys' volleyball teams, will appear this Friday in the Index-Tribune.

Baseball's Camp for a Cure slated

The fifth annual baseball "Camp for a Cure" for players ages 8 to 15 will take place at Casa Grande High School in Petaluma on Saturday, Nov. 1, with all the proceeds going to the American Cancer Society and the Lupus Foundation of America. Since 2004 "Camp for a Cure" has raised more than $38,000. This year's camp staff include the Casa Grande coaching staff along with high school and college coaches, professional scouts and professional players, including Jonny Gomes (Casa graduate playing for Tampa Bay), Brandon Morrow (Rancho Cotate grad playing for Seattle), coach John Goelz (Sonoma State University) and coach Damon Neidlinger (Santa Rosa Junior College). Sonoma Valley High School graduate Tom Everidge (playing for the Oakland Athletics' minor league system), who has helped at the previous four camps, will be playing winter ball and might not be able to appear. BGCSV looking for hoops refs

Boys & Girls Clubs Sonoma Valley is holding a free basketball referee clinic for ninth-graders and over, including adults, on Thursday evening, Nov. 13, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. at its Maxwell Farms Regional Park site (100 Verano Ave.). Referees will be trained and paid to officiate hoops games for boys and girls in grades three through eight.
