Bullheads working for stripers

Striped bass have move into the mouth of Sonoma Creek and the sloughs connected to it and the Napa River, said Joel Sinkay of Leonard's Bait and Tackle Shop at Port Sonoma. Anglers are also using Joel's live bullheads to catch stripers off the bank right at Port Sonoma.  The good news about using bullheads is that the fish generally run bigger than those you catch with cut sardines or anchovies. Joel has plenty of live bullheads and the fishing is just going to get better as we head further into September.

Out in the bay you can throw a rock and just fish where it lands and catch halibut, or so said Keith Fraser at Loch Lomond Bait Shop in San Rafael.  In spite of his frequent use of hyperbole, Keith is not exaggerating the quality of the halibut fishing in San Francisco Bay this year. From Angel Island back to the Richmond San Rafael Bridge, the Brothers, Sisters and South Hampton, the halibut are hitting drifted live bait with great enthusiasm.  The scores average one to two fish per rod per trip, and on many days they go much higher. Fish are running to 20 pounds and now stripers are starting to show up. Keith books for several party boats. Call him at (415) 456-0321 for more information. Capt. Rick Powers of Bodega Bay Sportfishing reported that his clients are still brining home full limits of rock  fish on every trip. The weather on most days has been perfect and the fishing is hot.  You can also expect to get a few lingcod as well.  Rick is going to be   searching for some albacore tuna opportunities soon, and is looking forward to the first weekend in November when the sport Dungeness crab season opens.  Call him at 875-3344.

Inland, Lakes Berries, Clear and Sonoma are all fishing about the same - fair to poor.  As the days shorten and the water cools, expect action to improve. Fly fishers may want to check out the upper Sacramento River where the fall caddis are starting to stir. It is still a little early, but sometimes the river can surprise you.
