Adele, Altimira needs coaches: Coaches are needed at both the Valley's Adele Harrison and Altimira middle schools for seventh-grade girls basketball and Altimira is also looking for a seventh- and eighth-grade coed soccer coach. Anyone interested can call the Sonoma Unified Schools district office at 935-6008, Altimira athletic director Andrew Ryan at 935-6020 or Adele Harrison athletic director Starr Green at 935-6080.

St. Francis CYO hoops: Sonoma's St. Francis Solano's CYO (Catholic Youth Organization) basketball program for third- through eighth-grade boys' and girls' teams is holding 2008-09 season mail-in registration for all returning and new players from today (Aug. 15) through Sept. 15. New players need to include a copy of their birth certificate with their sign-up forms and fees. Registration forms can be obtained online at www.falconscyo.com or at the Chestbed Store, 800 W. Napa St. (939-7733) and when completed, mailed along with the sign-up fees - $135 for first child and $80 for additional family members, with checks made out to St. Francis CYO Basketball - to St. Francis CYO, P.O. Box 1663, Sonoma, CA 95476. Also, St. Francis CYO needs coaches for certain grade teams. Anyone interested in coaching, or for more information, call Frank Lucchetti at 938-1031. Mertens Tennis Tourney: Sonoma Valley Tennis Association will hold its 2008 Marilyn Mertens Fall Tennis Tournament - a mixed doubles round-robin format event - on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Maxwell Farms Regional Park courts. The tourney begins at 9 a.m. and concludes at approximately 3 p.m., with snacks and a light lunch provided. The entry fee is $10 a player - checks payable to SVTA can be mailed to Judy Muller, 1114 Fryer Creek Drive, Sonoma, CA 95476 - and the SVTA will assist anyone who needs a doubles partner. Entries will be limited and the registration deadline is Thursday, Sept. 18. For more information, call Muller at 933-8020.

VOM Pétanque: Valley of the Moon Pétanque Club will hold its annual Wine Country Classic select doubles tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 23 and 24, at the Henri Maysonnave Memorial Courts in Sonoma's Depot Park. SVLL board election: Sonoma Valley Little League will hold elections for the board of directors at its 7:30 p.m. general meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 9, at Round Table Pizza and anyone interested in volunteering for a board position should attend. Coed softball: Sonoma Valley Coed Slowpitch Softball League is looking for teams to compete during the 2008 season on Monday and Tuesday evenings at the Sonoma Developmental Center field. Anyone wanting to register or start a team or for more information, call Deets Winslow at 996-6859.

Jr. Dragons fundraiser: Sonoma Junior Dragons (formerly Sonoma Valley Youth Football and Cheer Association) will feature its sixth annual Casino Night fundraiser on Saturday, Sept. 20, at the Sonoma Veterans Memorial Building. For more information, visit the Web at www.sonomajrdragons.net.
Haze girls' fastpitch softball: California Haze Girls Fastpitch Softball Organization is holding tryouts for the 2008 fall season this Sunday, Aug. 24, at Petaluma High School. Also, the Cal Haze girls' 18-Gold team is holding fall-season tryouts both this Saturday, Aug. 23, at Allan Witt Park Field-3 at 1741 W.
