The Marcus Shelby Jazz Orchestra presents an original composition about Harriet Tubman, the courageous woman who escaped from slavery and dedicated her life to civil rights, woman's suffrage and personally leading slaves to freedom while working with the Underground Railroad. The group plays a wide range of music, from Duke Ellington to Charles Mingus. The orchestra features Shelby on acoustic bass, Adam Shulman on piano, Darren Johnston on trumpet, Jeff Marrs on drums and Faye Carol as a featured vocalist.
Sonoma Valley Jazz society sponsors the free concerts in the Plaza, summer jazz camps for students and jazz at the Lodge. The jazz society is supported by donations, memberships and business sponsorship.
