Mike and Jeanette Teves have placed the reward in the hopes of finding who attacked their pets in the back yard of their East Sonoma home. Their 1-year-old pug, Lucy, died from her wounds and the 2-year-old Boston terrier, Roxy, is recovering from stab wounds to her chest. The attack occurred in the Teves' back yard in the 500 block of Este Madera Drive. The attacker apparently let the dogs out of the house and stabbed them in the yard. Jeannette Teves came home around 2 p.m. and found them and called the police.
Sonoma police Sgt. Bret Sackett, who is in charge of the investigation, said that the police have some leads they are pursuing. "We are looking at people who know the family or members of the family," he said. "We are begging the general public for information about the incident."
Sackett noted that the attack did not seem to be a random act; several details lead the police to think it was someone who knew the family. Nothing was stolen from the house, and the neighbors had no complaints about the dogs, which were said to be quiet and well behaved. Also, the attack occurred in a brief window of time between 1:15 p.m. and 2 p.m., when Teves had left the house on a shopping trip. She had put the dogs in the house before she left.
The veterinarian who treated the animals said that a knife with a one-inch-wide blade that was at least seven inches long was used in the attack, Sackett has said. The incident has shaken the otherwise quiet neighborhood and left the Teveses deeply upset.
"It's horrible," said Jeanette Teves. "It's creepy being in the house now. We miss our puppy (Lucy) so much ... We don't feel safe."
Teves is a homemaker and owner, with her husband, Mike Teves, of Sonoma Door and Sash, a local shop that makes customized doors and windows.
Teves said the couple is not staying in their house for a while and intends to install a new security system for their property.
She said they have received an outpouring of sympathy and support from around the country.
"I have received e-mails from people in Oklahoma, Kansas, Delaware and from all over California. I've gotten about 25 cards ... People have come over to our house and brought flowers and cards," she said.
The Teves have also received offers of financial support toward the reward for finding the perpetrator or perpetrators of the crime.
Anyone with information about the attack should call the Sonoma Police at 996-3602.
