Letters - Pauline Bond garden special

033004 - Editor, Index-Tribune: I'm writing to remind people of the Pauline Bond Community Garden. I spoke to some longtime Sonoma residents who have only recently discovered this biological gem. Located off Seventh Street East between MacArthur and Denmark, it is away from downtown activities and sometimes overlooked.

Last weekend my husband and I gave our own weeds a reprieve and participated in "Volunteer Saturday." It was a delightful experience. The path to the main part of the garden is shaded by a freshly blossoming grape arbor. New gardens with fragrant herbs for cooking and for teas are under way. Cheryl Itamura, the volunteer coordinator warmly greeted all the volunteers and had lots of projects, large and small for all levels of ability. It was fun to be part of such a friendly group of volunteers and to share both the work and the potluck of breads, salad, tasty spreads, crisp organic apples and pizza baked right there in the outdoor cob oven.

I'm sure Cheryl would welcome more volunteers on the second or fourth Saturday of each month. She can be reached at 996-8294. Or just remember to visit the garden and enjoy the beauty and serenity. Maggie Bedord
