Art Guild showcases student, mentor artwork

The Arts Guild of Sonoma (AGS) will present the artwork of Sonoma Valley High School  students as well as new work by guild member artists. The exhibition runs through Sept. 23 at the AGS gallery, 140 E. Napa St., Sonoma.

Several years ago the guild initiated a Summer Mentor Program which matches guild artists with one or more Sonoma Valley High School students to create a piece of artwork to be shown at the gallery during the month of September. It is an opportunity for the guild, through its community outreach program Artescape, to reach out to aspiring art students and introduce them to new media, materials and techniques that they do not have access to during the school year.

Over the years it has proved to be very rewarding for both the students and the mentor artists. This year, Janis Kobe has three students; Maya Harris, Kaylin Riebli and Gracie Bundschu; Thena Trygstad mentored Sebastien Ingham; Martin Munson mentored Ian Bon; and Steve Manfre mentored Genaro Pamatz. Many of the students continue on to art school having had the experience of creating and showing their work under the mentorship of professional working artists.

The Arts Guild of Sonoma, located right off the historic Sonoma Plaza, is a contemporary art gallery with changing monthly exhibits showcasing the work of local artists.

Opening receptions are held on the first Friday of each month and exhibit pieces in acrylic, encaustic, oil and water color paintings, jewelry, mixed media work, ceramics, metal sculpture and more, including smaller objets d'art, prints and note-cards. The guild was founded to exhibit and advance the creative efforts of local Bay Area artists.  The guild also participates in a wide range of community outreach programs to encourage art appreciation and inspire direct participation in the arts. One such program is Artescape (artescapesonoma.com), an art school in Boyes Hot Springs that holds classes, workshops, demonstrations, exhibitions and other continuing programs.

The Arts Guild of Sonoma gallery at 140 E. Napa St. is open Wednesday to Monday, 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. Admission is free.
