Arnold, Hess talk realism at SVMA Saturday

The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art’s “Talking Realism” continues with perhaps two of the best-known narrative realist painters in California, Los Angeles’ F. Scott Hess and Sonoma’s Chester Arnold come together for the very first time to discuss their particular brands of storytelling.

The discussion will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 11, at the museum, 551 Broadway, Sonoma.

Hess has been described as a “new Old Master.” His narratives blend realistic scenes of everyday life with symbolic and allegorical events, humor, eroticism, and voyeurism. Arnold’s landscapes evoke 19th century romanticism tinged with contemporary realities and the artist’s peculiar preoccupations. Join this spirited conversation as Arnold and Hess hash out the facts and fictions, observations and fabrications, and realities and myth that comprise storytelling and painting in the 21st century.

The cost is $12 for SVMA members and $15 for the general public.
