A Golden Celebration (From the Winter 2011 issue of SONOMA magazine)

Residents of Sonoma Valley took a break from their never-ending fundraising and volunteer board duties to celebrate Marcelo Defreitas’s 50th birthday. The Arabian Nights theme resonated perfectly with this crowd, who came dressed to the nines, and then some.
Marcelo and his partner, Scott Smith, along with Hump-Free the camel, greeted guests with pomegranate mint martinis, caipirinhas and a feast of lamb, calamari, couscous and other Middle Eastern delicacies prepared by Elaine Bell Catering. The hosts provided an evening filled with entertainment that included belly dancers with sabers on top of their heads and snakes around their necks.
Guests Sandy and Joan Weill, Les and Judy Vadasz, Tom and JaMel Perkins, Tim Freeman and Dean Carvalho, Jon and Carol Sebastiani and others, lifted their glasses in celebration to the guest of honor and his achievements.
Following dessert, guests surged to the dance floor for a truly magic carpet ride.
