European Country Sweet Bread

Ingredients:

4 cups all purpose flour
Peel of 2 oranges, grated fine
1 cup granulated sugar
2-1/2 t. cream of tartar
1 t. baking soda
Pinch salt
1/2 cup unsalted butter or margarine, melted, cooled
2 eggs lightly beaten
1/2 cup milk, room temperature
1 t. vanilla
1 egg yolk
4 t. orange juice
3 T. powdered sugar
1/8 t. lemon juice
1 pint fresh strawberries (or in season fruit)
Optional sweet whipped cream

Preparation - Directions:

Preheat oven to 350°. Place flour in large bowl, add orange peel, sugar, cream of tartar, baking soda and salt. Mix well. Add butter to flour mix along with beaten eggs, milk and vanilla. Combine all this with fork until mixture holds together. If mix is crumbly add more milk cautiously, must not be wet. Knead dough on lightly floured board several times and roll into log shape at least 3 inches high. Carefully place dough on a lightly greased and floured baking sheet, forming dough into oval shape and pinching ends together. Make shallow diagonal cuts about 3 inches apart on surface of ring. Combine the egg yolk with 2 teaspoons orange juice and brush over top and sides of ring. Bake in oven until toothpick test comes out clean, 30 to 35 minutes. Let stand 10 minutes, transfer to rack.
Combine remaining orange juice (2 teaspoons) with 3 tablespoons powdered sugar and lemon juice, drizzle over warm surface. Cool completely. On serving dish, pile seasonal fruit in center, whipped cream optional.
