Weed killer on the bike path?

Feb 28, 2013 - 07:50 PM

Editor, Index-Tribune:

Is there a good reason for the recent application of Round-Up (or some type of weed killer) to both sides of the bike path between Second Street East and Fourth Street East?  These areas have always been mowed in the past.

Now, they are a hideous shade of orange.  Not only is this extremely unsightly, but I don’t want my dog walking where this product has been used.

When and if it rains, this weed killer will make its way into our waterways.  Even if someone could convince me that there is no safety issue for dogs or humans, I can’t believe there is anyone in town who will find this anything but totally ugly.  What’s up?

Paint the brown weeds and grass green. Home Depot, Freidman's, Lowes, they all sell grass or ground green paint - actually a dye and water based. There are several different brands; Colorback, SEYMOUR Exterior Grass Paint, GrassBGreen, etc. Number of companies offer this service.

In college, 1969, I worked on I-70 in Colorado putting in guard rail. They had to kill the grass and seeds along the road as well as just dirt pilled up. After we put in a section of guard rail they would come along and spray the ground with green paint. We painted chain link fence along the freeway green too. I am not, I assure you, making this up.

We should have a city ordinance. "Whenever grass turns brown it shall be painted green within seven days." No six, we rest on the seventh.
