Earlier this month, Prestwood Elementary School selected fifth-graders Kayla Alcorcha and Andrew Akre as the school’s Students of the Year.

Kayla Alcorcha was chosen as Student of the Year by Prestwood as a result of her academics, her citizenship and her creativity in her schoolwork. Alcorcha has scored Advanced on every STAR test since second grade and has been named to the honor roll every trimester since fourth grade. She is described by her teachers as hard working and eager to expend the extra effort to make an assignment great rather than good. Despite being somewhat shy, Alcorcha overcame her fear of public speaking to serve as a student council representative. Outside of school, Alcorcha loves to draw and to read mystery novels. She spends a lot of time with her younger brother, eager to be a good role model for him. Alcorcha is excited to go to college to follow her dreams.

Student of the Year Andrew Akre’s teachers say that he is an excellent role model for his peers and for the younger students at Prestwood. Akre has been at Prestwood since kindergarten and he is described as being kind, funny, smart and respectful. He has consistently received ‘A’s on his report card and made the honor roll every trimester for the past two years. Earlier this year, he received Prestwood’s Good Citizenship Award. Akre has received all Advanced STAR test scores since second grade and last year he achieved a math score of 600. Outside of school, Akre loves to draw, read and play games on the computer. He would like to be an inventor or scientist one day, and he plans on going to a college with great science and architecture programs.

Congratulations to these hard-working and inspiring young students on this honor and to their families and teachers for encouraging their academic and personal success.
