Restoring school library funds
Editor, Index-Tribune:
Following is an open letter to the Sonoma Valley Unified School District board of trustees:
This letter is to express our sincere appreciation for your recent decision to restore elementary school library funding. We feel that funding elementary libraries is highly consistent with the district’s stated goal of having children reading at grade level by the third grade. As a group, we are very supportive of the district’s benchmarks. And as leaders of elementary and charter PTOs, we are especially interested in supporting reading at grade level by the third grade. It is wonderful to see the district clearly communicating its benchmarks, and following through by making decisions in support of those goals.
Also, we would like to tell you that we were very pleased with our reading event, Stories for Students, which took place in early February at the Sonoma Plaza amphitheater. Stories for Students raised approximately $2,400 for district libraries, and SVUSD was well represented at the event. In addition to parents and students, the event was attended by teachers, retired teachers, librarians, principals, school board members and the superintendent. Several of those who represented the SVUSD participated in the event by reading to children. We are very grateful to all who participated and attended.
We are truly excited about having increased access to our school libraries, and we thank you for your part in making that happen.
