Shortly after tipping off their Sonoma County League season Saturday night in Forestville, Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity basketball girls made sure the final result wouldn’t be in doubt as they raced to a 20-4 first-quarter lead and never looked back in powering past El Molino for a one-sided 57-14 win.
En route to their 43-point victory, the Lady Dragons, led by senior Ashley Vail’s energetic double-double effort, limited overmatched El Molino to four-quarter totals of 4, 6, 2 and 2 points, respectively.
Leading the Lady Dragons’ romp were Ali Romano’s 17 points; Vail’s double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds; Mackenzie Albrecht’s six points and 11 rebounds; Delaney Swanson’s six points and six rebounds; Kendall Ashe’s and Alexa Hall’s six points each; Megan Neely’s four points and nine rebounds; and Giana Monterosso’s six rebounds.
Comprising Sonoma’s varsity girls’ team – directed by head coach Sil Coccia and assistant coaches Steve Semenero and Dino Minatta – are seniors Vail, Ashe and Romano; juniors Madi Burningham, Amanda Lacy, Monterosso and Neely; and sophomores Albrecht, Hall and Swanson.
Sonoma’s girl cagers remain on the SCL road with 7:30 p.m. games in Santa Rosa against the league’s new school members.
The Lady Dragons play at Piner tonight and at Elsie Allen this Thursday, Jan. 10, before returning home to host longtime SCL rival Healdsburg next Tuesday, Jan. 15, in Pfeiffer Gym, with the junior varsity starting at 6, and the varsity playing at 7:30 p.m.
