Stinging from back-to-back losses, the first one costing them sole possession of first place in the Sonoma County League, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball girls regrouped, refocused and responded with the kind of strong team effort expected of them against an opponent they had dominated earlier in the season.

On the heels of their disappointing defeat to Petaluma in a battle of the co-league-unbeaten leaders, and last Monday’s fourth annual NBL-SCL Milk Day Challenge 55-44 loss to nonleague Maria Carrillo in in Santa Rosa, the Lady Dragons shutout SCL foe El Molino in the first quarter of Tuesday night’s game in Pfeiffer Gym.

Sonoma then allowed only three second-quarter points and cruised past the visiting Lion girls en route to an overwhelming 57-20 triumph.

Leading the Lady Dragons were senior Ali Romano’s 13 points and four rebounds; sophomore Delaney Swanson’s double-double of 11 points and 10 rebounds to go with two steals and two assists; sophomore Alexa Hall’s nine points; sophomore Mackenzie Albrecht’s seven points and nine rebounds; senior Kendall Ashe’s seven points and three assists; senior Ashley Vail’s four points and six rebounds; junior Giana Monterosso’s two points, six assists, four rebounds and two steals; junior Megan Neely’s two points and four rebounds; junior Madi Burningham’s two points and three rebounds; and junior Amanda Lacy’s two steals.

Sonoma girl cagers were paced in their loss to Maria Carrillo by Swanson’s 16 points, seven rebounds and four steals; Romano’s eight points, five rebounds, two steals and two assists; Albrecht’s six points and 10 rebounds; Ashe’s six points, five assists and four rebounds; and Vail’s and Monterosso’s four points each.

The Lady Dragons had a bye yesterday and will next host SCL foes Piner and Elsie Allen this Tuesday and Thursday, Jan. 29 and 31, in Pfeiffer Gym, with the junior varsity starting at 6, and the varsity tipping off at 7:30 p.m.
