In the wake of Tuesday’s Sonoma County League win in their Pfeiffer Gym home after a challenging schedule had them playing out of the Valley for nearly a month, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity basketball girls, having just beaten Healdsburg, were back on the road last night for another SCL clash.

The Lady Dragons traveled to Sebastopol to battle longtime foe Analy and, along with applying their trademark tough pressure defense, used their powerful post play, centered around senior Ashley Vail and sophomore Mackenzie Albrecht, to build up a 16-point three-quarter lead.

Sonoma then experienced a fourth-quarter offensive drought that allowed the Tiger girls to furiously rally back, cutting their deficit to single digits, while gaining confidence in stealing a big comeback win from what looked like a one-sided loss.

But the Lady Dragons regrouped, played back into sync behind Vail’s eventual double-double (18 points, 13 rebounds), and senior Ali Romano’s scoring touch, and finally sunk Analy for a 46-40 triumph.

With the win, the Sonoma girl cagers (10-8) remained unbeaten in SCL play after five games and will host another longtime league rival, Petaluma, which is also 5-0, in a first-place showdown tomorrow night, Saturday, Jan. 19, in Pfeiffer Gym – the junior varsity start at 6, and the varsity tips off at 7:30 p.m.
