Within reach of snaring a Sonoma County League title sweep after claiming the SCL dual-match crown, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity wrestlers enter tomorrow’s, Saturday, Feb. 16, SCL championships as the top-seed and holding the all-important one-point edge for their unbeaten (6-0) first-place regular-season finish.
But the Dragons know they’re in for a big challenge from second-place, and longtime rival, Healdsburg, the defending SCL overall champion that hopes to salvage one of the two titles after dropping the league duals.
Joining Sonoma and Healdsburg in Saturday’s 9 a.m. SCL tournament in Forestville are host El Molino, Analy, Petaluma, Piner and Elsie Allen, with the tourney’s top-three individual medal finishers in each weight class advancing to the postseason’s prestigious North Coast Section championships.
The NCS event takes place at 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 22 and 23, in Newark.
Comprising the 2012-13 Sonoma wrestling team – directed by head coach Kyle Baird and assistant coaches Deets Winslow and Ian Kruljac – are co-captain seniors Aidan Lacy, Giordi Serafini and Sam Denning, and junior Max Schimm; seniors Jonny Amandoli, Peter Gray, Alex Ohan, Sebastian Amara and Jose Vasquez; juniors Harris Meglen, Tommy Jordan and Chris Lohnes; sophomore Jake Randuch and Jack Biaggi; and freshmen Dalton Elster, Brandon Ruiz, Trevor Martinelli, Austin Beltran and David Price.
