In a rematch of last year’s North Coast Section Division-3 championship semifinal game, Sonoma Valley High School’s varsity baseball boys traveled to Lafayette on Wednesday for a nonleague showdown with the eventual winner of the NCS title, Acalanes, and after three innings, the battle remained scoreless.
With their ace, all-league starting pitcher junior Jimmy Flatt, keeping the clamps on Acalanes, the visiting defending Sonoma County League champion Dragons broke the deadlock in the top of the fourth frame when senior Brennan Cole delivered a two-RBI double for a 2-0 lead.
In the top of the sixth inning, junior Dan Deely contributed an RBI double to seal Sonoma’s 3-0 payback victory, with Flatt picking up his second win of the two-game start of the season, going the seven-inning distance for a 72-pitch, two-hit shutout, including five strikeouts and one walk.
The Dragons were also led by junior Miles Hagin’s two-for-three with a run scored; Cole’s double and two RBIs; Deely’s double, RBI and run; all-league senior Jonah Son’s one-for-three with a run; senior Jaxon Strong’s one-for-four with a run; and senior Richie Nunez’s and junior Vinnie Albano’s single each.
Sonoma continues its nonleague preseason with an afternoon game today at Novato, before hosting Terra Linda at 3:30 p.m. this Tuesday, March 5, at Arnold Field.
