Instead of completing their four-game Marin County sweep, as well as their fifth straight nonleague win, to start the season, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity baseball boys committed a rash of errors, couldn’t find home plate and were dealt their first loss, a 2-0 shutout, by Drake in San Anselmo on Friday.

Playing back-to-back days, the Dragons got a chance to amend for their poor road showing on Saturday at home and they responded with solid defense, steady, complete-game pitching by junior Devon Graff and some well-executed offense, which combined to produce a 7-3 nonconference victory over Eureka at Arnold Field.

With Graff picking up the win – scattering seven hits, while striking out three, hitting three batters and yielding two earned runs in seven innings – Sonoma was led past the visiting Loggers by junior Dan Deely’s three-for-four, including a double, three runs scored and an RBI; senior Jonah Son’s two-for-two with two runs and two intentional walks; senior Brennan Cole’s two-for-four with an RBI; senior Richie Nunez’s single, RBI and run; junior Miles Hagin’s single and RBI; junior Jack Murphy’s single; and junior Vinnie Albano’s RBI and run.

In their loss to Drake, the Dragons got another strong pitching effort with right-handed junior ace Jimmy Flatt’s three-hitter, but their offense didn’t give him any run support, while the defense lapsed in the field with four errors that led to two unearned runs.

The Dragons start a three nonleague-game week at 4 p.m. today when they host Vintage at Arnold Field, then hit the road to battle both Maria Carrillo at 4 p.m. in Rincon Valley tomorrow, Wednesday, March 13; and Alhambra at 1 p.m. in Martinez this Saturday, March 16.
