Sonoma swim squads host El Mo today, event results from Piner sweep, Petaluma split

After holding their annual season-opening Green and White intrasquad and alumni meet, the Sonoma Valley High School’s boys’ and girls’ track and field teams competed in nonleague tri-meets in Rohnert Park on Wednesday.

Both the boys’ and girls’ meets were won by Casa Grande, with host Rancho Cotate finishing second in the two competitions, while Sonoma’s squads were third.

The Lady Dragons’ lone event winner was sophomore Mackenzie Albrecht, who raced to a first-place finish in the girls’ 400 meters with a time of 61.8 seconds.

In the boys’ tri-meet, three Dragons were event winners, including senior Stephan Flynn-García’s 1,600-meter first-place finish in 5 minutes even; junior Keegan Ginter’s 3,200 first in 11 minutes, 14 second; and freshman Edwin Reyes’ 400 first in 53.38.

The Sonoma boys’ and girls’ track and field teams will next compete in nonleague tri-meets against Montgomery and host Windsor next Friday, March 15.

Sonoma’s boys’ and girls’ swim teams will host El Molino in SCL dual-meets at 4 p.m. today in the Sonoma Aquatic Center pool.

Both of Sonoma’s swim squads recently swept their SCL dual-meet openers at the SAC pool, with the Lady Dragons routing Piner 124-25, while the Sonoma boys defeated the visiting Prospectors 94-54.

Then last Friday, the Sonoma swimmers hosted longtime league rival Petaluma Friday at SAC and ended up with a split, as the Dragon boys pulled out a 72-63 victory, while the Lady Dragons dropped a 79-73 decision.

In their win over Piner, the Lady Dragons were led by the triumphant 200-yard medley relay team of senior Leanne Woods, juniors Madeline Cline and Gina Peil, and sophomore Amanda Gillion in two minutes 29 seconds; the victorious 200 freestyle relay team of Woods, Peil and seniors Allison Cogbill and Caroline Knef in 2:11.0; and the winning 400 free relay team of Gillion, Cline, Cogbill and junior Maria Hawing in 4:58.0.

Sonoma’s girls were also led by Cogbill’s 50 and 100 free first-place finishes in 30.06 seconds and 1:13.0, respectively; Cline’s 200 individual medley (IM) and 100 backstroke firsts in 2:45.0 and 1:17.0, respectively; Gillion’s 100 butterfly first in 1:15.0 and 200 individual medley (IM) in 2:46.0; freshman Mariela Mendoza’s 200 free first in 2:50.0 and 100 back second in 1:28.0; Woods’ 100 breast stroke first in 1:41.0 and 200 free third in 3:00.0; Hawing’s 500 free first in 8:04.0 and 50 free third in 31.0; Peil’s 50 and 100 free seconds in 30.61 and 1:14.0, respectively; senior Jamie Ballard’s 200 and 500 free seconds in 2:55.0 and 8:13.0, respectively; junior Kazmin Ortiz’s 100 breast second in 1:48.0; and Knef’s 100 back third in 1:36.

Leading the Dragon boys past Piner were the victorious 200 medley relay team of seniors Sebastian Amara, Chase Campion and Arthur Morgan, and frosh Jack Lewis in 2:01.0; the winning 200 free relay team of sophomore Rowan Todd and frosh Cian Lacy, Jacob Paine and Max Shepard in 2:07.0; and the triumphant 400 free relay team of Campion, Morgan, Amara and sophomore Adam Curry in 4:05.0.

Sonoma was also led by Morgan’s 200 and 100 first-places in 2:17.0 and 1:00.0, respectively; Campion’s 500 first in 6:33.0 and 100 fly second in 1:08.0; Lacy’s 50 first in 28.98 and 100 breast third in 1:31.0; Shepard’s 100 back first in 1:33.0 and 50 free third in 29.57; Amara’s 200 IM and 100 free seconds in 2:39.0 and 1:05.0, respectively; Lewis’ 100 breast second in 1:24.0 and 200 IM third in 3:00.0; and Curry’s 200 free third in 2:23.0.

In upending Petaluma, the Dragon boys were led by the winning 200 medley relay team of Paine, Lewis, Morgan and Curry in 2:13.62; the victorious 400 free relay team of Amara, Lewis, Morgan and Campion in 4:16.25; Morgan’s 200 IM first-place in 2:33.93 and 50 fly second in 33.85; Amara’s 50 free first in 25.89 and 100 back second in 1:10.90; Campion’s 100 free first in 54.12 and 200 free second in 1:57.31; Lewis’ 100 breast first in 1:20.75 and 50 fly third in 37.28; Curry’s 200 IM and 100 breast seconds in 2:55.37 and 1:32.70, respectively; and Paine’s 200 free third in 3:09.72.

Pacing the Lady Dragons in their close loss to Petaluma were the triumphant 200 free relay team of Peil, Cogbill, Knef and Hawing in 2:03.06; Cline’s 50 fly first-place in 35.34 and 200 free second in 2:31.03; Cogbill’s 50 free first in 29.91 and 50 fly third in 38.84; Peil’s 50 free second in 29.98; Knef’s 200 IM second in 3:10.53 and 100 breast third in 1:39.73; Woods’ 100 back third in 1:29.01; Hawing’s 100 free third in 1:12.29; and Mendoza’s 200 IM third in 3:13.78.
