Carolyn Sue Nunes (Maxwell)

Carolyn Sue Nunes (Maxwell) passed away at her home in Placerville, on Jan. 13, 2013, after a year-long battle with lung cancer.

Born in 1945 in Schellville, she grew up on the ranch and farm lands of “Wingo.” Upon graduation from Sonoma Valley High School she went to work at the Sonoma State Hospital (Developmental Center) were she had a 20-plus year career.

In retirement, she lived in El Verano, Mad River, and finally the last 13 years, in Placerville.

She was preceded in death by parents, Ivy and Samuel “Roy” Maxwell; her brothers, Ronald and Raymond Maxwell; and sister, June Mates. She is survived by husband, Alvin Nunes; son, Robert Matheson; daughter-in-law, Michele Matheson; and granddaughters, Jenna and Audrey; and numerous nieces and nephews.

She loved and cared for all animals, especially horses, and spent numerous happy hours taking care of creatures big and small at her home in Placerville. She was a woman with a tough exterior who believed in hard work, putting your best foot forward and doing the right thing. But those who got past the tough exterior knew she could be a warm and loving person.

Share memories and a celebration of life to be held on Saturday, Jan. 26, 2 to 4 p.m. at Schellville Grill, 22900 Broadway, Sonoma Ca. 95476.
