Altimira students choose from array of electives

Earlier this month, Altimira Middle School’s 320 sixth- and seventh-graders met in the school library in groups to use the school’s new netbooks (provided with Measure H funds) to log onto Power School and make their choice of an elective class for the 2013-14 school year. Students heard short presentations about their options, which include: drama, art, horticulture, Spanish, band and technology. Students take one elective all year, two or three times a week for 100 minutes. Principal Will Deeths explained that students make this choice in March to allow for scheduling and hiring to accomodate student demand for specific classes. “We let their interest dictate the hiring and scheduling,” he explained. Pictured is Counselor Robert Rocha reviewing options with the students and teaching them how to use the new Netbooks.
