What Obama wants

Oct 11, 2012 - 04:32 PM

Editor, Index-Tribune:

For those of you who want Obama to be our president four more years:

Do you want your president to continue to apologize to the world about the U.S.A.? He has.

Do you want the U.S.A. to be no more or no less then every other country in the world? He does.

Do you want our military to become second-rate? That is what he wants.

Do you really want the government to provide equal financial futures for all of us? He believes that is fair.

Do you want the government to tell you that you must purchase health insurance whether you want it or not? He already has.

Do you want dead people or felons in prison to vote? He is against a national voter ID.

Do you want your grandchildren to pay your debts? He seems to think it is OK.

Well, that is what you will get if you vote him back in.

A people get the government they deserve.

Mr. Young,
You are seriously misinformed. I suspect you gather information from a very limited and narrow source.

Roger, you said: “Do you want your president to continue to apologize to the world about the U.S.A.? He has.”

Obama’s never apologized for America. Maybe you confused Obama with Bush, who actually did apologize for some Koran burnings.

Roger, you said: “Do you want the U.S.A. to be no more or no less then every other country in the world? He does.”

Sorry Roger, here’s what Obama said to a British reporter: "I believe in American exceptionalism. I'm enormously proud of my country and its role and history in the world.”

You said: “Do you want our military to become second-rate? That is what he wants.”

Sorry again Roger, here's an Obama speech to our graduating Air Force Academy cadets in Colorado Springs: “We’ll keep our military, and our Air Force, fast and flexible and versatile. We will maintain our military superiority in all areas: air, land, sea, space and cyber.”

You said: “Do you want dead people or felons in prison to vote? He is against a national voter ID.”

The idea of voter ID is an old Republican response to address an imaginary problem that doesn’t exist.

The Republican National Lawyers Association (RNLA) released a report documenting all cases of voter fraud that have been prosecuted over the last decade: 311 voter fraud cases, out of our national population of over 300 million people.

Studies show 11% of voters do not have government-issued ID’s. That percentage is even higher for seniors, people of color, low-income voters, and students. In order to insure 311 voters do not fraudulently vote, you want to disenfranchise tens of millions of legal voters. Sorry Roger, that makes no sense; unless of course you are purposely trying to limit our voting rights, which is immoral and unconstitutional.

You said: “A people get the government they deserve.”

As a citizen of the most powerful and exceptional country the world has ever seen, I agree with you.

The only place all of these supposed goals of the President reside is in your own mind.

Regarding the military, I think Obama certainly embraces it in his own way despite what he says to his pacifist constituency. Examples are the increased use of drones and approving covert ops. Seems like huge standing armies are weapons of past total wars. And policy makers have correctly calculated our limited ability to wage total war due to a loss of productive capacity in our private economy. Limited covert war is what the future holds and Obama may well be adapting.

I'm still not going to vote for him though regardless of how dark blue CA is.

Tom stated, "The idea of voter ID is an old Republican response to address an imaginary problem that doesn’t exist."

If it doesn't exist Tom then why are the Democrats so
afraid of a voter ID card? What's the big deal? We have to
carry drivers licenses, green cards, etc: Even Diane
Feinstein and other left-wing Democrats were pushing
for a National ID cars some years back. All that is OK....but
a Voter ID card !!! God forbid!! What are you afraid of Tom?

Interesting how you worry about tens of millions of voters
being disenfranchised because of 311 people. First, let
me say I agree with your point, but as usual, Lefties like
yourself are not consistant with this. We get the 10
Commandments removed from court buildings, the pledge of
allegiance from schools, nativity scenes from our plaza,
all because of a handfull of bitter atheists who protests.
Most people could care less whether these things happen
or not. But, instead....we cater to the crys of a few
malcontent minorities who claim to represent the majority.
I know I am a little off-topic here but I needed to point
this out. So your OK with voter fraud because it's a small
number of people? At what point would the voter fraud
number be to high for you? Would you feel the same way
if Romney wins Florida by a slim margin and it was found
out that 311 votes (votes that may have put him over the top)
were illegal? So, I guess your OK with a little fraud...you
just don't like a certain amount of it.

Wayne, you said regarding voter ID: “If it doesn't exist Tom then why are the Democrats so afraid of a voter ID card? What's the big deal?”

It’s a big deal Wayne because voter ID disenfranchises millions of Americans from voting, and that’s unconstitutional. I’m sure you could appreciate that.

Most patriotic Americans are against voter ID because it’s unconstitutional; but don’t argue with me about it, here’s what our Constitution says: “The right of citizens of the United States to vote shall not be denied or abridged by the United States or by any State.”

Wayne, what you are missing is that lots of elderly and retired people don’t drive, thus they don’t necessarily have ID’s. Also, women who are divorced and are elderly have a hard time getting their original birth certificates in order to obtain voter IDs, even though they have been voting for years. Also, some of the voter ID laws are completely inconsistent. In some states student ID does not constitute the proper ID, while at the same time gun permits do. Wonder who that caters to.

So what am I afraid of Wayne? The incremental dismantling of our Constitution and legitimate voters right to vote.

You said: “So your OK with voter fraud because it's a small number of people?”

As I said, the Republican National Lawyers Association has found 311 voter fraud cases for the past decade, 30 cases a year, nationwide. Disenfranchising millions of eligible senior citizens, African-Americans, Hispanics, the disabled, the poor, students, rural voters, and the homeless is not the way to fix this non-problem.

Tom....You have got to be kidding me??? If these multitude of
ID less people (as you seem to think) are out there then
how in the world do they aquire all their social benefits??
You have to have some form of ID in order to sign up for
social benefits it would seem to me. Or..is the government
handing out goodies without knowing anything, about anybody??
I am not buying it Tom!! I think the overwhelming majority
of people have some kind of ID. I find it interesting
that you think it's no big deal regarding the amount of voter
fraud. You seem to down play that while over playing the
minuscule amount of people that don't have any ID.
