Test older drivers, monitor crosswalks
Editor, Index-Tribune:
I completely agree with Steven Meloan who, in his Nov. 27 guest editorial, advocated more rigorous driver’s license testing for people over 80 years of age. I’m also for increasing penalties to people driving with a suspended or revoked license.
Can we not have better controls of people with suspended and revoked licenses, too?
Regarding the apparently dangerous crosswalks mentioned in Mr. Meloan’s commentary, how about having a police officer or a police volunteer or trainee position themselves at those crosswalks during especially busy times of day to photograph or otherwise record vehicles violating signals or crosswalk indicators and endangering pedestrians? How about encouraging drivers and pedestrians to report crosswalk violations?
I believe all that takes is noting the license plate symbols and the date and time of the incident and contacting the police.
My condolences to the family of the man killed crossing Fifth Street West on his scooter, and my sympathies to Mr. Meloan’s son and his son’s friend for their injuries.
I hope they heal soon and completely.
