Tandoori lovers, rejoice – the popular Taste of the Himalayas Restaurant at 464 First St. E. reopened last week after a sweeping fire forced the business to close on Aug. 16.

“We have a brand new kitchen,” said Pemba Sherpa, spokesman for the restaurant.

The restaurant was near the end of lunch service when patrons of the neighboring Murphy’s Irish Pub saw smoke billowing out from the restaurant’s roof. The fire was largely contained to the kitchen, requiring a massive remodel of the space.

“We had to spend a lot of money,” Pemba Sherpa said.

He said the business is insured, but the owners are still working with the insurance company to settle the issue, meaning most expenses have come out of pocket. Pemba Sherpa said that made it all the more important to get the restaurant back in business as quickly as possible.

“We just had to put a lot of hours in to make it work,” Pemba Sherpa said. “We didn’t want to stay closed while we work with the insurance companies.”

But, he said, business has been slow since the restaurant re-opened last week, largely because many regular patrons don’t know it’s back in action.

“We’re just calling our regular customers and letting them know we’re open,” Pemba Sherpa said, adding that the restaurant is serving the same menu and has the same hours.

“It’s all exactly the same,” he said.

The restaurant is open for lunch from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m.; and for dinner from 5 to 10 p.m. Tuesday through Sunday. It is closed Monday. Call 996-1161 for more information.
