Talking to a library blender
Editor, Index-Tribune:
An ad now running on TV shows some people entering a shop. They are greeted – not by a person – but by a machine, in this case a blender.
Ridiculous? Well what about our sparkling new library? Machines check out our books, tell us our fines, remind us when things are due, and more.
I, for one, used to enjoy my frequent trips to the library, where I chatted with those who worked there who had become old friends. They would often recommend books to me and I to them. We’d engage in “author talk,” something book freaks like me really love.
Loneliness is known to be the deepest, saddest scourge in our society today, especially among the elderly, who are, by the way, devoted library patrons.
This is a small town; we all need and treasure the connections we make as we go about town doing daily errands.
Why is our beloved library making us talk to a blender?
