Students of the Year: Altimira Middle School
Submitted photo
Earlier this month, Altimira Middle School selected eighth-graders Thomas Gare and Annie Greenslade as the school’s Students of the Year.
Gare is one of only two eighth-grade students to have maintained a perfect 4.0 grade-point average all three years at Altimira, never having received any grade lower than an A. This accomplishment is even more impressive in light of the fact that, as an eighth-grader, Gare is taking high school level geometry, advanced language arts and advanced science. Gare joined Altimira from Sonoma Charter School. He is described by his teachers as “quietly brilliant” and as exhibiting impressive integrity for his age. Said one teacher: “Thomas ranks among the top few students of my 25-year teaching career.” Outside of class, Gare loves to go camping, fishing or hiking and spending time with his parents and sister.
Greenslade has excelled inside and outside the classroom in her three years at Altimira. She has maintainted a 3.95 G.P.A. with an academic load that includes geometry and accelerated science. She is also editor of the Altimira Yearbook and she loves to take photographs. In her spare time, Greenslade is an accomplished athlete, excelling at basketball, track and soccer. Greenslade joined Altimira from Dunbar School. Her teachers describe her as possessing a unique ability to balance academics, sports, family and friends. Said one: “Annie dives in to whatever task is at hand with boundless enthusiasm and good cheer, consistently creating excellent work while at the same time, creating harmony with those around her.”
This article is the fifth in a series that profile each Student of the Year honored in Sonoma.
