Sonoma’s preseason action ready to kickoff with football

Dragon gridders hosting scrimmage Friday; fall sports fully underway

Into their second week of preseason workouts, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity and junior varsity football teams are primed and ready to put what they learned in practice to productive use in their first competitive action of the 2012 fall season.

The varsity and jayvee Dragon gridders will host Santa Rosa in the annual preseason scrimmages between the two schools at 6 and 7:30 p.m., respectively, this Friday, Aug. 17, at Arnold Field.

Then the Dragons open their regular season by hosting nonleague Redwood on Friday, Aug. 24, at Arnold Field, with the jayvees playing at 5 and the varsity kicking off at 7:30 p.m.

Along with football, Sonoma’s fall sports programs include girls’ volleyball, boys’ and girls’ soccer, boys’ and girls’ cross country, boys’ and girls’ water polo and girls’ tennis and golf, with most of the Dragon teams going into full practice mode this week.

Any student-athlete wanting to participate in Sonoma’s 2012 fall sports programs needs to have all her or his paperwork – including current mandatory physical examinations, proof of insurance, completed emergency cards, signed (student and parent) code of conduct forms and paid fees – completed before practicing.

Forms for athletic participation are available from 8:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday at the SVHS student activities office until this Wednesday, Aug. 15, when the school year begins and the office will be open until 3:30 p.m.

The volleyball Lady Dragons continue their double-day tryout sessions from 8 to 10 a.m. and 4 to 6 p.m for the varsity, jayvee and frosh teams on Schantz Track and in Pfeiffer Gym today and tomorrow, Wednesday, Aug. 15, the first day of school.

Tryouts for the jayvees and frosh are from 4-6 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 16, with the varsity taking the court from 6 to 8 p.m.

This Friday, Aug. 17, there will be a 6:30 p.m. mandatory meeting in the Pavilion for all the girls who made the squads and their parents.

The Lady Dragon spikers will scrimmage Casa Grande and Vintage next Tuesday, Aug. 21, and Thursday, Aug. 23, respectively, before the varsity team participates in the annual Napa Jamboree on Saturday, Aug. 25.

Sonoma’s cross country boys’ and girls’ teams will hold a practice sessions at 3:45 p.m. today at the Maxwell Farms Regional Park course, before holding daily 3:30 p.m. workouts at SVHS, meeting near Golton Hall.
