Sonoma’s JV, frosh boys, girls leap into hoops action
Frosh girls O’Donnell, Stanfield all-tourney
Along with their varsity teams, Sonoma Valley High School’s boys and girls’ junior varsity and freshman basketball squads have put their 2012-13 seasons into full action with opening night games and a tournament.
The jayvee Lady Dragons first handily beat Cardinal Newman in a Foundation Game last Tuesday, which doesn’t count in a team’s overall record, and then officially tipped off its season with a 48-21 road win at Novato.
The Sonoma jayvee girls, coached by Jann Thorpe, consist of sophomores Laryssa Baker, Shelby Camilleri, Angela Fulkerson, Hanna Lemaire, Sierra Lilly, Ciara Smith and Rian Verdu; and frosh Bella Bollman and Sami Von Gober.
Leading the Lady Dragon jayvees past Novato were Camilleri’s 15 points and seven rebounds; Smith’s double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds; Lilly’s six points, four rebounds and three assists; Fulkerson’s six points and four rebounds; Lemaire’s five points, seven steals and three assists; Bollman’s two points and six assists; and Von Gober’s two points and three rebounds.

Sonoma’s frosh girl cagers opened their season competing against Division-1-level teams in the Pittsburg Tournament and capturing the consolation championship with a 2-1 record, including 28-22 and 51-44 wins over Liberty and Heritage, respectively, after losing the opener 41-36 to eventual tourney champ host Pittsburg.
The frosh hoops Lady Dragons – directed by head coach Mark Burningham and assistant coach Jen Russo – consist of Raquel Darnell, Jenny Eggers, Annie Greenslade, Berenice Gonzalez, Renee O’Donnell, Brittany Richards, Tsering Sherpa, Emma Stanfield and Nathalie Vega.
Earning all-tourney honors for Sonoma were O’Donnell, who, in the three games scored 42 points, grabbed 27 rebounds, had five steals; and Stanfield, who scored 30 points, 15 rebounds and eight steals.
Also pacing the Lady Dragon frosh in the tourney were Darnell’s 29 points, 11 rebounds and 10 steals; Eggers’ 17 points and nine rebounds; and Greenslade’s two points, 18 rebounds and six steals
In Saturday’s 29-8 road victory at Novato, the frosh Lady Dragons were led by Stanfield’s 10 points, five rebounds and four steals; Darnell’s eight points; Eggers’ six points and three rebounds; O’Donnell’s one point, 10 rebounds two seals and two blocks; Gonzalez and Green’s two points each; and Greenslade and Richards’ three rebounds apiece.

Sonoma’s jayvee boy cagers officially opened their season with a 70-26 loss to a strong Ukiah team Saturday night in Pfeiffer Gym.
Comprising the Dragon jayvee hoops boys – directed by first-year head coach Lee Cambra – are sophomores Diego Alvarado, Kaden Cable, Vince Caruso, Return Bongiovanni, Thomas Crumly, Kyle Dunevent, Ryan Fisher, Jack Hart, Anthony Hamiter, Christian Jimenez and Luke Vaughn; and frosh Kevin Hurtado and Spencer McNairy.

Sonoma’s frosh hoops boys opened their season Saturday night in Pfeiffer Gym by dropping a 52-36 decision to a tough Ukiah squad, with Edwin Reyes scoring 10 points for the Dragons.
Rounding out the frosh Dragon boys’ roster, coached by Jon Sevenau, are Dylan Bearg, Austin Chapin, Lukas Chipchase, Travis Claeys, Drew Harder, Freddy Padilla, Joe Peterson, Miles Pimentel, Daniel Van Kirk and Max Yankovich.
