Sonoma frosh girls dream hoops 25-1 season

Open field

Feb 6, 2012 - 01:36 PM

Achieving the next best thing to a rare perfect season is not a campaign with just one loss, but a one-loss by only one-point season, which is the impressive feat the talented and well-coached Sonoma Valley High School freshman basketball girls accomplished on Friday in Pfeiffer Gym.

In routing Sonoma County League foe Analy 53-21, the frosh Lady Dragons put the finishing touches on an amazing 25-win, one-loss overall 2011-12 season, which includes both a perfect record in SCL play and decisively avenging their lone one-point loss to non-league Montgomery.

The 2011-12 Sonoma frosh girls’ hoops team was directed by head coach Mark Burningham and assistant coach Jen Russo, and consisted of Laryssa Baker, Shelby Camilleri, Angela Fulkerson, Hannah Gropman, Alexa Hall, Hanna Lemaire, Sierra Lilly, Alexandra Quackenbush, Lauren Simpson-Gomez, Ciara Smith and Rian Verdu.

In defeating Analy in Friday’s season finale, the Lady Dragons were led by Hall’s 11 points and two assists; Smith’s 11 rebounds, six points and five blocks; Lemaire’s 10 points, nine steals and four assists; Quackenbush’s seven points, three rebounds and two steals; Gropman’s seven rebounds and three points; Simpson-Gomez’s four points and four assists; Verdu’s four points, three rebounds and two steals; Fulkerson’s four points and three rebounds; Baker’s three rebounds and two steals; Lilly’s two points, two assists and two blocks; and Camilleri’s two points and two steals.

What makes the this strong Sonoma frosh girls’ team’s near-perfect season even more impressive was the fact that it was achieved without its two best freshman cagers, Mackenzie Albrecht and Delaney Swanson, who were top players for the junior varsity Lady Dragons.

With Sonoma’s hoops-talented frosh girls, including Albrecht and Swanson – who proved their high-level athleticism in the fall as all-league standouts for the SCL co-champion Sonoma varsity volleyball team – and their solid jayvee teammates, the future of Lady Dragons’ basketball is looking brighter than bright.
