The 24th season of the popular Wednesday Night Drags at the Sonoma Raceway comes to an end tomorrow evening, Wednesday, Nov. 14.
Along with the Wednesday Night Drags themselves – open to anyone with a driver’s license, who can race any vehicle or motorcycle they bring to the track, provided it passes a simple tech inspection – the weekly event also includes the equally popular “Top the Cops” program, and the motorsport of drifting.
The Top the Cops program is designed to help take illegal racing off the streets and bring it to a safe, legal and controlled environment, allowing high school students the opportunity to drag race against law enforcement officers, who drive their squad cars.
Drifting, presented by Sonoma Drift (powered by NOS) and held in the paddock behind the main grandstand, requires drivers to control their car while it slides sideways at high speeds through a marked course, and they’re judged on execution and style, rather than who finishes the course fastest.
Gates open for “Drag and Drift” at 3:30, practice begins at 4, and the racing takes place from 5 to 10 p.m., with the Wednesday Night Drags cost being $25 for competitors, $15 for students with a high school ID, and $10 for spectators, while the drifting costs are $40 for pre-registration and $50 at the gate.
