With this un-winter-like, more spring-like warm, and, unfortunately, non-rainy weather, the Sonoma Valley High School varsity baseball boys opened their 2012 season as hot as a summer day, and ended it in smashing style by routing nonleague Washington of San Francisco 17-3 Saturday afternoon at Arnold Field.

Holding a 6-3 lead, the Dragons got out of a jam with solid relief pitching in the top of the fourth inning, then broke open the game with four-run bottom of the fourth, and seven-run fifth.

Sonoma junior all-league southpaw pitcher Brennan Cole picked up the win, with mound-relief work by senior Chris Swanson and junior Vince Bruton, who threw three strong innings for the save .

Sonoma’s offense was led by sophomore Dan Deely’s three-for-four, with two RBIs, three runs scored and a stolen base; junior Jonah Son’s two-for-four, including a triple and three RBIs; senior Will Murphy’s two doubles and two RBIs; senior Sam Morgan’s double and two RBIs; Swanson’s single and RBI; junior Richie Nunez’s two RBIs; and sophomore Vinnie Albano’s single, two runs and a stolen base.

Rounding out Sonoma head coach Don Lyons’ and his coaching staff’s varsity roster are seniors Will Rose, Michael Hernandez, Ryan Matteo and Tyler Johnson; and junior Jaxon Strong.

The varsity baseball Dragons travel to Eureka this weekend for a nonleague double-header in a home-and-away matchup after the Loggers traveled to Sonoma last year.
